Readings
and Book Chats
If
you're a bookstore or library looking for something just a bit
different from a traditional reading, you've come to the right place!
Recently,
I've been doing lots of slide show/reading events, offering a
glimpse of the places in Ireland that have stirred my imagination, and
all the
people (including
archaeologists,
pathologists, antiquities experts and some amazing 2,000-year-old
bog men) who have inspired my stories.
My
recent slide show presentation is called: "The Body in the Bog: Wetlands Archaeology
in Lake of
Sorrows." I also offer a
program called "Bog Music: Haunted Ground and Lake of Sorrows," about the themes and places that
feature in both books.
I
love speaking to booklovers, writers' groups, library audiences, book
clubs, and people interested in Ireland. The setting can be as formal
as a theater stage or as informal as a circle of chairs beside the fire.
We can talk about everything from the writing process—doing research,
creating
characters, developing a plot—to the challenges of getting published in
today's literary
marketplace.
The
cost for a public presentation will depend upon the circumstances—let
me know what you have in mind...
Adding
a bit of music
A
few tunes are just the thing set the mood for a reading, so I’ll
occasionally bring my husband, button accordion player Paddy O'Brien.
Paddy
is
considered, by people in Ireland and America, as a walking encyclopedia
of Irish music. He has an
incredible store of tunes—over
3,500 at last count—all
carried in his head.
During
readings he'll often give
people a taste of dance music like jigs and reels, or set the tone for
a reading with an expressive slow air or an old harpers' tune.
Because
Paddy makes his living through music, we usually charge some sort of
fee to cover his time—and
again, the cost depends entirely upon the circumstances, so let us know
what you're thinking about.
